A Judgement of Powers – Scheduling Plans

We’re now getting into the run-up to the release of Inheritance of Magic #3, A Judgement of Powers, and I’m at the stage of deciding what I’ll be releasing on the blog.  As usual I’ll be releasing the first couple of chapters around 1-3 months prior to the book’s publication, but one additional thing I’ve been thinking of doing this time round is posting up a piece of bonus material:  the letter from Book #2, decoded and with Stephen’s annotations.  Let me know if you’d be interested, and if so, whether you’d prefer me to release it before chapters 1 and 2 of A Judgement of Powers, or after.  (I’m kind of undecided on which, since it relates to some of the content of Chapter 1.)  Tell me what you think in the comments!

It would definately be interesting to see the whole decoded message – definately looking forward to that – but I guess it would be more thrilling to have it in the chronological order

  2. Jason Enberg says:

That would be great. I know there are some people who found the correct version of the book and translated it already but I would love to see it here. Whenever you want to release it is fine.

  3. Skeeve says:

Stephans annotataions for the decoded letter would be very interesting. Chapters too, but we’d get to read them anyway soon enough.

  4. Zen says:

I’d be interested in the decoded and annotated version, maybe between Chapters 1 and 2 if it relates to the contents of Chapter 1

Personally I would like Chapter 1, then decoded letter and then Chapter 2. I’m off on holiday soon and want to mull over Chapter 1 while sitting in the sun (but more likely sitting inside with the air-con on full blast). I’m just hoping that this isn’t just a trick to get Stephen to reveal his Dad’s refuge to Byron…

Whatever you decide to do I’m sure that I will just love the early reveal!

Thanks for involving us and hope that Book #4 is still progressing!!

Waiting for one year for the next book is torture. I have to blend out the existence of the series for month. Therefore I do appreciate chapters in advance (but would refrain from violating the order, publishing the letter before chapter three. – There is one issue I had with Alexus Verus. – At some point in life (if the possibility is given) you have to take over responsibility (you can’t reject all institutions without falling back into anarchy (where the strongest rules). – Therefore the end was dissatisfactory. And by being the object of others (and there planing) – Stephen is under the same spell. – So there has to be a development of his craft (what I have been missing in the last book). – I personally would also like to see more development with the german maid who was supposed to marry his cousin. – Well (I know) you have your own plans – but as a reader I cant’ avoid having own thoughts, especially when I have to wait years for the final chapter. Perhaps I may add: The question is, whether he will be drawn into the game of his family (and their opponents) – or if he can reach partly his freedom by making his own decisions out of his own strength (for example selling sigls to the shop where he got the catalog from).

I agree that I’d like to see more of Joanna in the books. She seems (so far) to be both grounded and honest in her approach. BUT why didn’t she visit Stephen in hospital after he was attacked by Vermillion? He was (sort-of) acting as her security at the time…

I vote for releasing the decoded and annotated letter, though I’ve no opinion on the timing. Yeah, you can find at least one decoded version online, but we can’t confirm its exact accuracy. And if there were any errors, it could potentially change the meaning of the letter.

Can’t wait for the book to come out, especially the audiobook! Will Watt really does a great job bringing your amazing writing to life. 🙂

I 100% agree, adding the letter plus two chapters means that I get my ‘fix’ of the storyline in August rather than having to hang on until November.
It’s frustrating knowing that its all finalised but can’t get to find out the what the next book holds for another three months!

I managed to get the correct copy of the book needed to decode the letter, so I was able to do that myself (not sure how accurately I did it though!), but I’d love to see Stephen’s annotations! So, please publish it!

I’m not sure about the timing, though. Do whatever you think best about when to publish.

For those fans who don’t visit your blog, I hope you can also add that annotated & decoded letter to the appendix of the paperback & hardback editions and to the PDF download for audiobook listeners.

  9. Liudmila says:

Oh, please, the letter first! I read the second book a long time ago, and this letter still haunts me!

  10. James Cage says:

I literally logged onto your website today to see if someone had decoded the entire message. I used to have a yellow copy of Watership Down but today I couldn’t find it. Maybe I read it to pieces or owned it to someone.

  11. Sunta Del Priore says:

I like the idea of having the annotated letter to read first, on a stand-alone basis. It would be intriguing to be able to ponder its implications ahead of the story to follow in Chapters 1 and 2 of Book 3. As to Johanna, I respected Stephen for his refusal to be drawn into a shady night out with her. Her story could be interesting but maybe not as a romance thing.
