One Million Copies Sold

I did have a second Ask Luna post lined up for this week, but I’ve been in touch with my editors about marketing/title information for the new book, and found out in the course of the conversation that I’ve hit a milestone.  At some point in the last year or so, between its UK/worldwide edition, its US/Canada edition, and its German edition, the total sales of the Alex Verus series ticked over from 999,999 to 1,000,000.

It’s pretty amazing now that I think about it.  When I wrote the first words of what would eventually become the first book in the Alex Verus series, it was 2008 and my publishing history consisted of a couple of children’s novels that had failed to sell, plus a long string of rejections.  I had absolutely no reason to believe that Fated would even get published, much less be successful.  If you’d told me back then that it would turn into a twelve-book series that would sell a million copies, I would have laughed.

But that’s exactly what’s happened, so thanks to everyone who’s made it happen by supporting me over the years.  I hope you enjoy the new series, too!

Wow, I actually would have guessed more, given how much of a presence Alex Verus now seems to have in fantasy circles. Congratulations! At which book did you realise you might actually be able to write full time?

Locnil, per things Mr. Jacka has said on his website, he likely decided to be a full time writer around book 4. He rewrote book 1 during his first year of law school, and wrote books 2 & 3 during his second year. (Law school in the US is three years but not sure about in the UK.) Then while looking for legal jobs after graduating, he realized that looking for legal jobs was taking away from his actual paying job of writing, so he decided to stop looking for legal jobs and become a full time writer.

That’s the gist of what I remember, though my memory of what he wrote could be a bit off. All that is amazing to me cause we were strongly encouraged NOT to have a job during our first year of law school. Seriously impressed at his dedication.

Good work is not always rewarded…. So nice that yours was. This was a series that started strong and kept getting better. Alex, his friends and his enemies, will always have a special place in my library!

Congratulations! I hope the audiobooks count to the total. I am mostly blind and rely on those (Gildart Jackson was a fabulous narrator). I think I got all of them on day of release after about book 3, and finished them within a day (my work did not suffer much, I promise). Look forward to the new series.

Well-deserved congratulations. The Alex Verus series is one of a very few series I have re-read several times, and one whose quality steadily increases throughout the series. Looking forward to the new books!

Man, that is well deserved and still underrated. I am close to finishing “Fallen” and loving every turn of the story.

I am recommending this series to everyone I know.

Congratulations on the success of the Alec Verus series. Any feedback on how the two short stories sold? Best wishes for the new series may it as or more successful!
