This is so exciting! Just downloaded to Kindle.

    Thanks so much.

  2. Alicia W. says:

    Congratulations!

I downloaded the audiobook this morning and got as far as Chapter 2 before I had to get to work and it’s fabulous so far. I love Will Watt’s narration.

  3. Mark C says:

Downloaded the ebook after midnight and was done before 7. It really pulled me through. I hope I don’t have to wait too long for book 3.

  4. Jonathan says:

I’ve really been enjoying the hints of how Stephen is being influenced by the books Father Hawke is getting him to read. I’d love a list of what Stephen is reading! I think I recognize most, but a list of the books alluded to would be fun. What is the title of the one mentioned in this book?

Is Father Hawke’s description based on Keanu Reeves? That’s the picture in my head.
Thanks for writing! I’ve been enjoying your work from the beginning of the Verus series.

    • Benedict says:

I could put a list together. Should get around to it at some time!

No, his appearance isn’t based off Keanu Reeves. His appearance *is* based off a character, but it’s a fictional one, not an actor.

      • Celia says:

Do we get any hints as to what fictional character? 😉 A list of the philosophy books would make an interesting reading list. I loved how Father Hawke’s teachings let Stephen rip Byron’s recruitment pitches to shreds in book 1. I confess I did not expect to like a priest so much.

      • Jonathan says:

        Excellent, thanks!

  5. Maria says:

Congrats! Been looking forward to it!

  6. Adeline says:

Loved it!!! Already super excited for book 3! The exploration of wealth and class in the series so far is very well done.

  7. Celia says:

Really enjoying the audiobook!!! Thanks for writing this. 🙂 Can’t wait til your AMA next week!

  8. Brian says:

Ok, devoured the audio book overnight and today. I’m already looking forward to a re-listen! I really enjoyed Charles Ashford’s real-politic based advice. It’s a thought provoking perspective.

Congratulations on a great read. This series is totally captivating for me. Hope the next one comes soon.

I feel a little bit like I’m thanking parents for a delicious Thanksgiving meal – I know it took lots of effort and care to make, and then I wolf it down in minutes. But please know I’m sincerely grateful and the splatters of food on the walls and ceiling are signs of affection.

    • Benedict says:

Heh. Yeah, it takes me 6 to 9 months to write a book that a fast reader can go through in a few hours. Still, I’m always happy to hear that readers go through my books quickly, since it’s a sign that I’m doing something right.

  9. J. Brooks says:

Just finished Instruction in Shadow. What an awesome book. Great story and world building. Stephen is really an intriguing protagonist.

  10. Imp says:

An incredible book, but why so short? And how long we will have to wait for the next one?

Anyway, i loved Alex Verus, but this new series is becoming even better.

    • Benedict says:

It’s actually about the same length as the Alex Verus novels!

      • Imp says:

True, and it’s definitely not enough!

Also, when I started the Verus series, almost all of them were out, so it was not a problem, once one book ended, the other was there, waiting. Now, every book seems quite short… and there will be nothing else for a year or two :'(

You definitely created something significant and unique. Congratulations.

Anyway, how long will we have to wait? Can you at least give a rough estimate?

        • Benedict says:

The first draft of Book 3 was completed about a month ago. I’m currently waiting for first-round edits, and once I get those we’ll start the road to publication. In all likelihood the book will come out about a year from now, so autumn 2025.

        • Celia says:

I’m so used to reading urban fantasy novels that are around 300 pages now that it’s hard for me to slog through 1000 page epic fantasy doorstops! I love the faster pace of UF. I admit it was great to be able to binge most of the Verus series when stuck in quarantine though! I think I had to wait for the last two books IIRC.

      • Imp says:

Found out that you mentioned the end of the summer. That’s not that bad 🙂

  11. Kayla says:

I really want to thumbs up a lot of the comments here. Especially the book list and comment about feasting on the books. Thank you so much for the scrumptious meal. In the middle of the book I was thinking that this has been packed full of completative content and was surprised to see so much more remaining. I’m debating buying Stephen’s favorite childhood book and finishing what’s been started or maybe I shouldn’t. Can I ask if it was a favorite of yours or a good choice for Stephen?

  12. Bilbo says:

Still not in my local bookshop, but the owner confirmed he has 15 being delivered. Perhaps next week sometime. Fingers crossed.

  13. Ryan says:

Having stumbled upon the Alex Verus series only about 3 months ago (found because of your Dresden Files alluding quote in the beginning of the series!), I’ve ripped through those and now am absolutely loving the new series! Keep up the incredible work, the refreshing and different look into how a magic system could work is great!

    • Ryan says:

      P.S.
I’m also wishing you every success on the series as I’d love to see you continue to get to explore this universe!
